An international campaign has helped a young mother in Spain win back custody of her 15-month-old daughter, after Madrid authorities removed the child due in part to her "chaotic" breastfeeding schedule.
The young mother, Habiba, had checked her daughter and herself into a shelter, and soon after social service officials began to criticize Habiba's habit of feeding her child on-demand, which they consider to be "chaotic" and "damaging," and also for co-sleeping. When Habiba refused to wean her baby, Madrid social services separated her from her daughter, sparking international outrage.
A Facebook page in support of Habiba amassed over 9,000 fans, and childcare experts worldwide lobbied on Habiba's behalf to have her baby returned. 3 weeks after mother and child were separated, a social services committee overturned the original removal, reuniting Habiba and her daughter.
Spanish officials now claim that breastfeeding was not the reason the child was removed, citing more serious issues.

Comment by Jessica Lee on July 6, 2011 at 4:44pm Most people feel that babies should be weaned at 1 year. However babies are suppose to be weaned when they get their full set of teeth 26mo) to eat food on their own. If you look at mother nature, this is how it works in the animal world. The only reason why we feel its weird or gross is because we we taught to believe that way through years of indoctrination. However, I personally don't want my child sucking on me at that age but I will pump and give her my milk in a cup beings she will never have dairy anyhow...
Comment by Freedom L Sutcliffe on July 6, 2011 at 2:14pm With the exception of when to wean (18 mos???) I agree with @Jessica Lee completely. My son is almost 2 and I would still BF him if I didn't deploy overseas. Usually around 2 the child will wean himself or you can BF at home if concerned about what other ppl think. I think there is an age limit (like 5) but ever body is different. ***But as far as why ppl took her baby away, I am sure it's because she was still BFing...a lot of people don't understand and it's a shame.

Comment by NewOrleansMamma on July 5, 2011 at 10:45pm I feel like there has got to be more to this story. Who woudl take a child away from a mother that was feeding her? There must be something missing
This story makes me lose trust in government. That anyone could think nursing a child on demand is a bad thing, I just don't understand. My son is 14 months old and I still nurse him and have no plans of stopping anytime soon. FOr the first 6 months, I nursed him every 1 to 2 hours or whenever he wanted and was often stuck underneath him in between because he fell asleep. I wouldn't have changed anything about that!
