Hats, and animals with tails, are some of my just turned 2-year-old's favorite things, so he's really taken with this slightly twisted tale of a bear searching for his lost hat. And I'm happy to read it to him, because I'm as big a fan of "I Want My Hat Back" as he is. This is one of those rare parent-child books.
What's the story? In his search for his lost hat, a polite but direct bear questions a handful of his fellow forest-dwelling animals. Their responses - the meat of this book - range from straightforward to paranoid to confused.
The book's clean design and simple illustrations have a retro feel, but it's the story's natural-world-rules ending that really recalls the storybooks of my childhood: when the bear discovers that the rabbit's the one who has stolen his lost hat, he does a whole lot more than just steal it back!
This last part is lost on my son, and that's fine. All he knows is that the bear has a really awesome red pointy hat and a small but sufficient tail.
This one's best for kids ages 2 to 6.

My 3 year old and I love "I Love You So..." by Marianne Richmond. We love to recite the lines,
"I love you."
"How much?"
"So much."
"How much is so?"
"Way, way more than you know."
