Kindergarten-Bound

Dear Baby Princesses,

I can’t believe BP1 is starting kindergarten tomorrow.

I actually didn’t think I’d be as emotional as I am at the moment.  While yes, of course time flies and sometimes I still think of you as a tiny baby in a lab swing, the truth is we have all been waiting for this for a while.  Because of the cutoffs here you are starting kindergarten less than two months from your sixth birthday.  Practically speaking, that meant that last year…

Three to Be You and Me

Dear Baby Princesses,

I know it sounds trite, but I can’t believe BP2 is 3 years old.

At the same time, my sweet girl, you’ve come such a long way from being that tiny snuggly baby who used to wail her head off and then melt my heart with her sheer softness.  Those big blue eyes and crazy dark hair .  .  . it’s lightened up a lot now but I think that’s always how I’ll see you.

You’re nothing if not your own person at age 3, my sweetheart.  You…

Thankful for You

Dear Baby Princesses,

This year and every year, I am thankful for the time I get to spend watching the two of you together.

Yes, I know it sounds cheesy, and I imagine that when you are old enough to read this you will groan and think something like "Mom, come ON. You are the worst." But I hope you know that underneath the cheesiness there is a level of true sincerity. Right now it is amazing to watch the two of you interact, as you play wonderfully together and are more than…

Five and Fabulous

Dear Baby Princesses,

You're both growing so fast that I'm overwhelmed by it.

As usual, it's been way too long since I've written and there's too much to say. But I'll do my best. BP1, you just turned 5 and you're so excited about that. Like last year, we did your party at Champion Kids, but with a Super Bowl theme this year. (Since your Daddy always has a Super Bowl party, you wanted one as well.) You had a fantastic time and it was easy for us, so a win all around.

On…

Parenting on Ice

Dear Baby Princesses,

I'm still not entirely sure that we did the right thing.

Last night we went to Disney on Ice.  I will say that I do not regret it, because you both LOVED it.  You wore your Elsa and Minnie costumes, BP1 sang along and BP2 applauded constantly, even though it pretty much started at your bedtime.  So the event itself went great.  It was the rest of the day that was a struggle.

Yesterday morning the two of you went to the…

Happy Birthday, Incredible Hulk

Dear Baby Princesses,

I cannot believe that BP2 is two years old!

As always, I have waited way too long to write, and I'll certainly never be able to catch you up on everything that's happened since my last post.  I keep saying that I'm going to write shorter, more frequent posts, and maybe one of these days I'll actually do it.  Work has been absolutely insane for me and even though it's 8:30 at night right now I really need to be working.  But I didn't want to put…

Best Tiny Support Network Ever

Dear Baby Princesses,

Thanks for being there for me always, even though you don't know how much love and support you provide.

This is always a hard time of year for me and Daddy, sweet girls. It's been 3 years since we lost our baby at 23 weeks, and while we think about him every day, it always stings a little more right around the anniversary. I think we have experienced the grief very normally; it felt for a time that it was the worst thing that could ever happen to us (and I…

Tell Me About It

Dear Baby Princesses,

You both have so much to say.

BP1, I was commenting to someone the other day that you are now at the precise age where you more or less speak like an adult, but without any sense of timing, appropriateness of certain topics, etc. You are just, just beginning to understand the concept of not saying things that might hurt people's feelings, but you haven't yet really grasped why words could even be hurtful. Recently, you asked "Mommy, why do you have all of…

Fussy Eaters

Hi there,

I have been having a lot trouble getting my 2 1/2 year old son to eat healthier. I know this is a common problem for all parents and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what helps? Or any examples of solutions where they have achieved the impossible- of healthy eating for their kids. Any ideas for help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Tummy time is a no no!

I need major help here, I almost feel like there could be something going on with my little man. He's 3m1w old and still can't hold his head up on his own... he absolutely refuses to do tummy time, I even let him lay there and cry but he doesn't even attempt to lift his head... I need some suggestions!

Fall Roundup

Dear Baby Princesses,

I need you both to nap for a while so I can catch you up.

BP2, let me start with you this time. You are 16 months old and such a huggable delight. Your sweet smile lights up your whole face, and we all love to make you laugh. You're at the phase where you can't really talk yet, but you understand everything and love to participate. The other day we were talking about BP1's letter of the week in her class: O. We all raised our arms to form Os and you threw…

3 children 2 fathers..how do I blend?

I have 2 children with my ex-boyfriend of 10 years. I recently had a baby with my current boyfriend. He is a first time dad and doesn't have the patience I need him to have when it comes to my oldest 2 children. I want to make sure that all of my kids feel like we're a family and no one ever feels like an outsider. I've tried talking to him about this but he just doesn't seem to understand. Any…

Everything and Nothing

Dear Baby Princesses,

It's been more than a month since I wrote; everything and nothing has happened.

You both seem to change and grow every day. BP2, you are now more than 13 months old. We are waiting for the magical day when you start walking on your own; you are definitely capable of doing it but you haven't realized that yet. So you are on your feet a good portion of the time but always holding on or pushing something. On the Saturday of your birthday party (June 28) we…

Happy Birthday, Miniest Princess

Dear Baby Princesses,

Monday is BP2's first birthday.

My smallest princess, you have brought so much happiness to your big sister, your Daddy and me this year.  Thank you for being the embodiment of softness.  Thank you for sucking your thumb in a perfect baby cliche.  Thank you for looking around in delight every time you hear applause.  Thank you for trying to chase after your sister on your hands and knees.  Thank you for always looking to her for her…

Lactation Room in Airports

Baby Princesses - this post is not for you, but for nursing moms out there. I've got a couple of things to post for you soon. Thanks for letting me use "your" blog to vent . . .

Dear Reagan National Airport and Delta,

I’d like you to imagine for a moment that you live in a world without bathrooms.

Let me amend that picture slightly. Not all bathrooms have been eliminated; there are a few here and there in recognition of the fact that a small sliver of the population does…

Should Little Girls Wear Make-Up?

Before you read this post, I should warn you…I have a real thing about kids growing up too fast. I hate it. I don’t like the fact that so many kids seem to have better phones than I do. I don’t like the fact that many have girlfriends and boyfriends before puberty. As the mother of two little girls, ages two and four, I especially despise the fact that a lot of little girls wear make-up.

I know a lot of people out there think it’s really cute to put some eyes shadow and lip…

We Have a Visitor

Dear Baby Princesses,

You've seen a lot of action over the past couple of months!

We just took our first longer-than-2-hours road trip as a family, to Charleston for R and T's wedding. I'd say we probably should have given ourselves another day there, but other than the quick turnaround we had a great time. The hotel worked out perfectly; we had a…

The Night BP2 Was Born

Dear Baby Princesses,

I can't believe my littlest princess is almost 11 months old.

Before any more time passes, I want to share with you BP2's birth story. I am sorry that it's taken me so long to do it, but rest assured that I remember the important parts pretty well.

My due date was Tuesday, July 2, 2013 and I was convinced that I was going to have a July 4 baby. The previous Saturday, June 29, we spent a nice portion of the afternoon at Baby N's first birthday party.…
