Dr.Jen Is In: Dealing with Stranger Anxiety (and your anxiety)

"My son will be 11 months old and is still suffering from stranger anxiety. I understand what his issues are with people who he doesn't know, even if it is family. The funny thing is, he will have his days that he has no problem going to certain people and then there are days when he just flat out refuses. It makes me feel bad at times, and I feel as it's my fault because I kept him home with me his 1st year. The thing that makes me mad is that everyone calls him a cry baby and says…

Expecting Baby #2.

We found out a couple of weeks ago that we're expecting!!  I'm due Jan. 24, 2012.  It's a little overwhelming - we're excited and a little scared.  Our little one just recently turned 9 months old, so she'll be 17 months when the new little one arrives.  We have decided to keep it a secret from our family for a little while since it wasn't exactly planned.  [You all are the first to know!!]  It's going to be an adventure but we can do it.

"She…

Nipple-phobia

One of the reasons women and men are so uncomfortable with breastfeeding, and view it as pornographic, is culture. We are raised in a culture where women's breasts are highly sexualized and as a result are considered verboten.  As a result of hiding this and censoring this it has become fetishized.  In the middle east where women have to cover their faces and hair, they can still breastfeed in public and not get harassed for it.  They get arrested for a lock of hair uncovered but not their…

Dr. Jen Is In: Dr. Jen’s 10-step program for getting your toddler BACK TO BED!

"My 2 year old has had an issue sleeping in her own bed. She sneaks into our bed around 1am & falls back asleep, or my husband will lay down in a mat in her room so she can sleep. I got her to bed at 830 the other night & she woke up 45 min later screaming & running down the hallway. Has anyone experienced this? I don't think it's her wanting to stay up late, because she wants to sleep in our bed & when it's time for her to go down, we…

I don't know whats wrong with me.

Its only been 2 weeks since I gave birth to my son who I love so much. He always makes me smile no matter what, bad or good mood. But just this morning I woke up feeling the total opposite...I had such a dark negative vibe, I couldnt look at my son and I just cried constantly and I dont know whats wrong with me. I had to get out and breathe...I didnt want any company at all-I was very anti-social today.I even wanted to break it off with my bf JUST BECAUSE. So now my son is with his…

Calgon Take Me Away!

It's been a long day. I've been up for almost 18 hours. I just want to lay on the couch and catch up on my three episodes of "Glee" that are in the DVR. But, that's just not going to happen. It's the witching hour. Moms, Dads, you know what I'm talking about. It's the time just after your child's bath, just before bedtime, when they have somehow gotten their second wind and are ready to party like Steven Tyler from Aerosmith. It's the time when your speed is set more like Barry Manilow's…

Dr. Jen Is In:

“Any tips and advice for storing breastmilk in the fridge and freezer? I try to feed my 12-day-old off my breast during the day and bottled breast milk at night while pumping every 3-4hrs if I can during the day... Another question is when did you use your frozen breast milk? Was it when the supply went…

It's a Boy! It's a Girl! It's a ....

Surprise! You hear that word a lot if you go to a party where someone is celebrating some kind of milestone birthday. You hear it sarcastically when you've just heard something you really wish you hadn't. I've noticed the majority of the surprises in my life aren't things I really want to remember. But there are a handful that I hold near and dear to my heart. One of those is the surprise of not finding out the sex of my daughter before she was born. I remember everyone saying, "Oh my God! How… Continue

in regards to mothers day

my first mother's day didn't go so well. not this year, the one before. while i was still pregnant.

after running to a million different places(everyone wanted a piece of me as usual, and no one respected the fact that i was preggo and tired, as usual). finally, i ended up at my dad's house. his cousin cindy was there, as was my brother. both of them bombed out of their skulls. cindy first started in on how she wasn't sure if i was pregnant or fat and spend the remainder of our time…

Average Salary of a Stay at Home Mom

Hey Stay at Home Momma's!

Do you ever feel like you're working a thankless job? Like nobody believes you contribute because you don't have a legal government job?

I recently saw a comment by a mother on a blog about figuring out the cost of everything we do. It really got me to thinking, and I decided to do the research! So the next time your significant other tries to say you don't have a real job, throw this in his…

Learning is painful =(

My sweet little baby is growing up so fast. Right now he is in the process of learning to "cruise." Unfortunately, this feat seems not only more difficult to master, but also more painful to learn than simply pulling up and standing. I swear it feels like every time he moves he falls down. When he does, he almost always hits his head or his face on the coffee table, his favorite new toy. I know it looks like I abuse him! He has three bruises on his little face right now. One from today on…

Not my Boobs Anymore

I am a mother to an 8 month old girl. She is the light of my life! I was able to give her the colostrum when she was first born, but struggled for a week 1/2 afterward with breastfeeding. I seeked the help of my OBGYN and 4 different lactation consultants, two of them of whom I had been with while in the hospital after birth. I fell into the category of the few percentage of women whose milk was not going to come in. I…

Judgmental People

I just read something on my friend's Facebook wall that really upset me. Steph, if you read this, I love you, but your friend - not so much. I don't even know this chick but she really set me off!!!

Apparently my friend has been feeling pressured to have another child right now, which really sucks. So, she posted a status about it. On her status, her friend made a comment referring to how selfish people who have children close in age are because we (I say we because I will be…

A Mother's Day Let-Down

Last Mother's Day was my first Mother's Day.  I had only given birth a few weeks before, and since my husband is usually not the type to buy gifts for almost any occassion, I had no expectations that he would remember the special day.  So, imagine my surprise when he brought a card and a box of chocolates into the nursery while I was nursing our son at 6:00 A.M.  It was nothing elaborate, but I was stoked!  I even decided not to hound him for not signing the card, or for forgetting to record…

The Perfect Present

Many men search and search for the perfect Mother's Day gift. Where do I go? What do I get? What does she really want? Jewelry, flowers, a fancy dinner...they're all great gifts, but not really what I'm looking for this Mother's Day. Although if they did come my way, I wouldn't say no! (Mama didn't raise a fool!) Although I'm only about to celebrate my second year of this joyous holiday, I've quickly come to realize being a mom can sometimes be a thankless job. Don't misunderstand me…
