Dr. Jen Is In: Walkers and other wheeled toys

Is my 5-month old ready for a walker?
 - ShaswandaI chose this question to answer because you used the word “WALKER” -  your question concerned me from a safety perspective.Although some parents were raised using walkers and may believe that walkers will help children with development & walking, walkers actually may DELAY walking and are quite dangerous. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics does not support baby walkers and has asked for a ban on these products.Baby walkers are…See More

Dr. Jen Is In: How to help your toddler get used to the potty

My daughter turns two at the beginning of November and we would like to start potty training her pretty soon. However, she is very, very afraid of the potty. I think it is the flushing that scares her to death since she says, "Flush it?! Flush it?!" and then runs in the opposite direction whenever we flush it. What should I do to encourage her to use the potty (starting with the little potty) without traumatizing her? -Jamie First of all, your almost two-year-old daughter may simply not be…See More

Dr. Jen Is In: How to handle hitting, pushing and throwing

My sitter has been telling me that my 15-month old has been hitting, pushing, and throwing toys for the last few weeks, and last night I had the opportunity to see it for myself. I was blown away. He is apparently walking up to 4-year-olds and pushing them down. He takes toys right out of the other kids' hands, and when the sitter corrects him, he has an absolute fit! I watched him pick up a toy twice as big as him and throw it. He knocked over a big playhouse, pulled a box of toys off the…See More

Dr. Jen Is In: How to care for baby gums and first teeth

This is my first child so I am new to all this. My daughter is 7 months old and a couple weeks ago her first 2 teeth in the bottom front started coming through. What I am wondering is when do you start brushing? Should I start now while they are coming in or wait til they're all the way there? Right now you can only see the tops a little poking through. -Ashlee PWhat a terrific question, and what a proactive mom you are for thinking ahead. Starting healthy dental habits early is a great way to…See More

Dr. Jen Is In: How to handle a picky eater

My little girl is starting to get very picky with her food! She's spitting out all fruits and will only eat vegetable if its a thick consistency like sweet peas! Is she getting all the nutrients she needs?? :(I see that your little girl is about 9 months old now. This is a very typical time for babies to start the picky stage! As babies explore finger foods with new colors, textures, shapes and tastes, the “personality” of taste and preference emerges. However, this is a great time to encourage…See More

Dr. Jen Is In: How to wean a toddler from nighttime nursing

"My daughter is 14 months old and still breastfeeding. I'm not sure if I want to wean her completely, or just start to. She still wakes up and I nurse her 2-3 times a night. Should I stop the night feedings? Will she sleep through if I do? Weaning advice please?" MackenzieThis is a terrific topic for us to explore. If you are nursing your 14-month-old several times at night, you have got to break free for both of your well being. The beauty of nursing is not only nutritional sustenance for your…See More

Dr. Jen,

I have a question about my 3 1/2 year old.  Over the past year she will get a pain on the side of her head by the ear/temple area that will make her cry.  They come out of nowhere and it only lasts no more than 30 seconds.  She will grab the area and start crying but like I said it doesn't last long at all.  She will then go right back to what she was doing like nothing happened.  It is very sporatic, once every month to sometimes a couple times a day.  I came across something called "ice pick headaches."  What are the possibilites that this is what she is getting.  There are no other symptoms or issues.

Thank you
