I had always heard that twins and triplets are hereditary. Are there other sets of multiples in your family?

There are 3 sets of twins in both sides of my family but donor's family is unknown. But we also did In-vitro and implanted 2 embryos after 2 years of failed mixed fertility treatments... So its hard to say in my unusual case if there's any linkage.
Yes, my maternal grandfather was an identical twin, and he also had identical twin sisters.  When he was an adult after he married my grandma, she got pregnant w/ twins however, she lost them at about 6 mos. gestation.  They also say the whole twinning gene skips a generation, but don't ask me why I never once thought even for a second that I'd ever have twins!  The whole thing is just so questionable.  I asked the nurse at my obgyn about it all, she said that identical twins is considered more like a "fluke" and that fraternal twins is usually due to the ability for the mother to produce more than one egg (which is a gene that can be passed on to latter generations).  My boys clearly appear to be fraternal (they look nothing alike, although I have never actually gotten them tested) so I believe I just carry the ability to produce more than one egg.  I know also as women age closer to their 40's their body becomes more and more capable of producing more than 1 egg, so this too is also a possibility for others who had multiples, but I got pregnant just after I turned 25 so my age would not have been a factor and makes me guess it was just my genes.  Anyway, when I found out I was having twins I was also taking "history and methods of science" in college, so I asked my professor about it since we were on the topic of "genes" at that time.  She said identical twins is not a "fluke", that scientific research has proven there is an actual hereditary gene for this, just as it has been proven for fraternal twins... so, who knows what to believe anymore, but yes twins do run in my family for sure!

No, none, no where. I never was even one of those girls who say "Oh, it would be so neat to have twins!" It was out of the realm of possibility in my mind.

What a surprise it was for me when we found out we were having twins.

Then my husband hugs me and says, "I knew it...I prayed for this." Well, thank you God, we couldn't be happier!

haha, that's awesome! Did your husband happen to mention his prayers to you before you got pregnant? I think it would be (chaotic) fun to have 2 at once!

I have 2 sets of twins.  My girls are 4 years old identical twins and they are the 9th set of twins in my family.  My boys are fraternal and are the 11th set of twins in my family.

I have twins on both sides of my family only one other set of identical on my father's side.  My maternal grandmother had a twin brother and my mother miscarried twins in her 6th month so I don't think it skips a generation.

There has definitely got to be some kind of gene connection here at least.

There are 5 sets of twins under the age of 7 now in the family.  You could imagine holiday time.

wow, that is a lot of twins in one family! and your poor mom, miscarrying twins (and so late in her pregnancy!). that must have been hard.

do you notice a lot of differences between the fraternal and identical twins? besides the obvious I mean ;)  i've always heard identical have a very special, almost magical bond, what do you think?

My identicals are inseparable and their teacher has been trying to separate them a little bit but they are in the same classroom, same ballet class, same bedroom (I don't have the room to separate them at home now), so there is a very special bond between them.

The fraternal twins are only 6 weeks old so I don't know yet.  I have read though that same sex twins tend to be somewhat closer. My identicals are girls and the fraternal are boys.  I guess I'll have to see.

Yes, I have twin brothers and uncles on my mothers side. The doctor told me it depends on the women side. I thought it would skip a generation too.......So not the case, lol
I have them on both sides of my family.  And, skipping a generation.... don't think so, my maternal grandmother had a twin brother and my own mother miscarried twins at 6 months.  My father and two of his first cousins, who are brothers, all grandfathered twins, and my father had two first cousins that parented twins.  My mother had two first cousins miscarry twins and finally I have three 2nd cousins who have twins.  I might have even missed one or two.  Currently, the oldest living twins in my family are 50 years old and the youngest are my boys who are 6 weeks old.

Nope! There are no twins as far back as we can track in either my or my husband's families! God just wanted us to have these two little girls :)
