all these are good, but don't wash your nipples with soap. it can take away your natural oils causing dryness thus more pain. just let the soap from other parts run over them if so while you rinse. if you must wash them then use baby wash, cetaphil, or some other very light wash. i use cetaphil sensitive bar all over. pat dry nipples, don't rub, don't use a washcloth or anything like that to clean your nipples. water should be all you need. g'luck!
I used Soothies. (I think that's what they were called, or something like that) haha They are a gel pad that goes right on your nipple. They were a life saver for me. Read the dirrections, you have to clean the area before nursing or pumping because of the gel. I got then from Target.
there are two different types of the lansinohs. the one that helped me is yellowish/brownish and was amazing. i didn't like the stuff that was clear like vasaline. also letting your nipples air dry with your milk on them does wonders. my boy latched well but he liked to CHOMP with his gums. everyone told me it was improper latch but it was just his way of telling me he loved me i guess LOL. warm showers are good but don't put soap on your nipples because it's supposed to dry them out and make everything worse. talking to your dr is always a good idea in case it's thrush. good luck!!! also there are bra inserts you can use i never bought them but i hear they work wonders. you can chill them or heat them : )

You can also drop your milk in to the sore. I hope that helps you.

I know this is older. Thanks for asking this question. My daughter is 2 weeks and I am hurting like crazy!!!!!! She chomps on me,nurses every hour, not latching on properly, and everything. This is my 4 th child and the 1st that I had these problems. I have used the lan cream and it helps a little. When my breast milk comes in, it burns. Man this is crazy! I will not give up. I am making an appointment for the lactaion consultant tomorrow and I am making an appointment with my ped tomorrow just in case it it thrush.

Oh my goodness! Sorry to hear you're having such trouble with this one. I'm glad you've had success in the past, I'm sure that helps you not give up. I know if I was having that kind of trouble and it was my first child, I would be tempted to give up.

I hope everything goes well with the ped/lactation consultant and they can help you both. Good luck!

Thank you so much. The ped is calling in meds and I was able to get an appointment with Lactation tomorrow.

good to hear! don't give up if it's somethjing you want! g'luck!

Wow the first week is pretty painful no matter what you do. Just stick to it and know it will become less painful andmuch easier as both you and baby get the hang of it. It can be very frustrating!! I definitely broke down and cried the second night with my baby. I was SO sore and ready to give up, and how did I know if my baby was getting enough nourishment? I spoke with a lactation specialist nurse from my hospital. Watching my baby's diapers was key to making sure she was getting enough to eat, and breastfedding is tough at first but gets easier. The nurse reassured me, and offered info on the hospital's free lactation guidance classes. It was a relief to know there was somewhere I could go to for hep. Can you contact your hospital to see if they offer this?
One more thing... I only used the lasinoh (sp?) cream around 3 or 4 times in the beginning. My baby didn't like the taste, and I feel like it caused problems with latching properly, then I had to wipe it off, ow! After I wiped it off I had more success. I also found using my own breastmilk worked best and is recommended, too. The baby had less of a latching issue then. Plus, I only gave the pacifier at nighttime, after all of babys needs were met, to avoid the nipple confusion. Even with little pacifier use, she still sometimes struggled in the mornings to latch on. But we are both (me and baby Caleigh) very confident at feeding time now :) any questions, please just ask! It can be frustrating, I know! The benefits for you and baby are so great, so it makes it worth it in the end. - Lauren
