Permalink Reply by MamaBird on October 11, 2011 at 1:52pm Is this a new thing or has this been a problem since your baby was born? If it's a new development, then I think you're doing the right thing by seeing your doctor. If it's thrush, they should be able to get that cleared up for you. If this has been going on for the 8+ weeks you've been breastfeeding, I'd talk to a lactation consultant. My nipples were very sore in the beginning too, but it was resolved within a few weeks.
Good luck! I hope you get some relief soon!

if it's thrush let me know, i went through thrush with my son three times, and I have a zillion tips for that! :)

The best thing I did was rent or buy (on Craigslist for a bargain) a good breast pump and pump a couple of feedings a day. That way, your baby can get used to using a bottle, and your nipples get a break. Also, Tea tree oil is a natural anticeptic that you can use to prevent infection and help speed healing. You can get it at Walgreens in the first aid section for about $9.99. It absorbs quickly, so it won't last long enough to get in your baby's mouth and you can apply it between every feeding. It won't hurt your baby, but it probably won't taste all that good to them and you don't want them to build up an aversion to your nipples. Tea tree oils is great for so many things and is worth the money. You can use it on cradle cap, eczema, and other skin ailments for baby and mom.
Cold compressed worked best for me to relieve the pain. I think they work way better than warm compresses. The warm ones are more for clogged ducts which would are more likely to occur in other areas of the breast. Hang in there! IT will get better. Also change your
