My daughter just turned 1 years old on the 18th of January. She started out on breastmilk until she about 4 months old.  Once i began to work again, i was not able to produce as much milk (despite the contstant pumping at work) which i then had to start giving her half breast milk(the little i could pump) and half enfamil. at about 5 1/2 months she was fully on enfamil and has been..now that she has turned one ..i recently transitioned to Enfagrow which is the "milk powder." My question is, is it neccessary to have her on enfagrow or should i tranisition her to regular milk. Also how do u know if u should put them on whole milk or skim milk!? i have so many questions and i am a first time mom, i really just need some opinions...formula is expensive and although i can afford it, if i can put her on regular milk i wouldn't mind doing that..she eats table food..and has a healthy appetite. Any comments?

My girls never had health issues either and milk doesn't settle with them. I babysit for a 1 year old now that has the same milk allergy but her mom refuses to see it. She gets fussy and has runny diapers. If a baby has even the mildest allergy it can weaken their immune system - which means they can get sick from other things faster. Lots of moms think that the fussiness and stuff is from the illness when it's just snowballed from a simple milk allergy. Don't feel pressured into this if you're not comfortable with it. It truly is not necessary.

You can start your daughter on whole milk at age 1 no problem.  But like some of the other moms have said, milk is not necessary to thrive.  You can get the calcium from other sources, like yogurt, broccoli, leafy greens, etc.  Just make sure she is getting enough fat from other sources, as fat is important for their growing brains.  My daughter just turned one also, and she's not a big fan of cow's milk... we give her what we can, and for the rest of her fluids she gets a lot of water and a little juice.  We make sure her foods contain enough calcium and fat so that it's ok.  She's doing well.

Ok.  I will test it out (because i will always wonder about it) and i now understand better that this is not my only option and i am not neccessarily going to have to continue to buy formula (which should cost less by the way lol). I just simply want to make sure im doing all the best things for my daughter that i can. I know i will make a few mistakes on this path but i just want to be full aware of everything in an effort for me to make the best decision. I will pay close attention to her diapers when i test it out. To be honest, i am a bit leary so i have not yet began to give her a little...not sure what im waiting for, but i don't feel it will hurt her to not give it to her..she is on the Enfagrow Milk Powder now so she is definately getting all the nutrients she needs. I do give her a lot of water and i am taking her off the bottle..she uses sippy cups also but at night she has a bottle. This website is very helpful and the people on it are GREAT! Thank you again ladies for all your stories and advice..it is greatly appreciated.
