At my son's 4-month check-up, he had hit a weight plateau (he is exclusively breastfed).  The doctor didn't seem too worried about it.  She said that it's pretty common for breastfed babies to hit a plateau like that, but it was usually closer to six months.  She recommended we try a little bit of rice and start transitioning him to solids slowly.  We've been trying a few times a week since then (about two months now) and have not had any luck.  He gets one taste of it and starts screaming, gagging, flailing his body around, etc.  Even when we can get some of the cereal in him, he ends up throwing it up about a half hour later.

We've tried mixing the cereal with both formula and breastmilk.  We've tried rice and barley.  We've tried a spoon, dropper, and bottle.  We've tried holding him, sitting him in the high chair, laying him back in the bouncy chair.  We've tried sleepy, wide awake, before breastfeeding, after breastfeeding, etc.  NOTHING IS WORKING! :-(  I'm worried he won't have gained any weight at all by his next check-up.

I also feel like I once read that babies react that way when they know they are eating something bad for them (ie a child experiencing lactose intolerance will scream and cry when they are given milk, as if their bodies let them know that the milk is bad for them even before a doctor has figured it out).  I'm wondering if he could be having some sort of reaction, but I'm thinking  probably not since we've tried both barley and rice and not had any luck with either.

Any advice/thoughts would be appreciated! :-)

Try mixing the rice with a little baby food like apples or sweet potatoes

I mixed it with a little apple juice and water to sweeten it up too.

I agree with La'Charia my son is 5 months old and at his last 4 month check up the pedi asked if I'd tried cereal i told her yes but it wasn't successful. I asked her if I could mix in some baby food like bananas or apples he said yes just give it a few days before I try something else to see if he has a reaction to it. The first time I true it with bananas he loved it cried when it was all gone. Also I think the box of cereal says something like 1 tbsp cereal with 4-5tbsp that so watery just mixed in some formula until it was slightly thick and added the fruit. Try it maybe it will work for you also. GOOD LUCK!

we skipped rice with both kids. Try mashing up some fresh avocado or giving him some pureed apple instead. Rice cereal is gross by itself. Have you ever tried it? Yuck. lol

lol.  When mixed with breast milk it is not bad because breast milk is sweet. I know that may sound gross, but I wanted to know what she was eating lol.

Don't stress. The medical field is a pratice. I'd wait. If he doesn't like birthday cake (when older) I'm sure you wouldn't keep pushing it on him. Tell the Dr you tried and he doesn't seem ready. My daughter is and always has been the skinny no weight gainer but she was happy and had good wet/dirty diapers. Congrats on breastfeeding this long. (ps pedisure helps put on the weight or maintain it)

Since he's 6 months now, try different foods.  Pears are supposed to be easy on the digestive system.  Since the rice isn't working, don't give it to him anymore. Wait 5-7 days in between trying new food.  If he doesn't eat something at this point, it's ok.  He's getting all the nutrition he needs from your breastmilk.
