I'm a first time mother and I always have a million questions. When do you start weening off the bottle and bedtime bottles?  I went to the doctor and was not mentioned to me about her still being on the bottle. The doctor said she to drink no more than 15oz of milk per day. So she has 3 oz for the morning and 8oz at bedtime which i use the bottle for both  and water throughout the day. Someone told me that she needs to get off the bottle after 1. She 15 months. Is that true?. She takes a 8oz bottle at night and I rock her for 5 min and put her down. I been told a lot of things so I thought I reach out to moms and see what you think. Thanks

It is recommended to take it away around 12 months about the same time you switch to whole milk. It's important to not put kids to bed with food or drinks. Most kids are learning to take care of their teeth and have started dental visits (every 6 months).

Every kids is different but these steps are to help their teeth and gums. Research is now showing that dental hygene is the start to good health. These are not set in stone. I would try to take the bottle away at night. My daugters Dr didn't want her to have milk or water. She was to have juice all day and she drinks a bunch (increase calorie intake and milk allergies). But that is her and every kid is different.

My lo wouldn't and sill has a hard time with traditional sippy cups. She uses a kid (spill proof) straw cup. She has started to transition to a 'big girl cup' at 2 1/2. It make take a few weeks to find a cup she will use. You might try a special character cup. Mickey Mouse, Tinker Bell etc.

Now my sister-in-law (mother of 5 boys) has kept the kids on the bottle till they put it down. Her youngest just turned 2 and he still goes to bedwith the bottle. You know your baby best. Remember every kid is different and that none of these are set in stone and no one is perfect. Do what make you and her the most comfortable, and consult with her Dr.

My boys are 22 months and still have a bottle before nap time and before bed.  Now, trust me I don't think this is the ideal situation... but it's just what is working for me and my family for now.  They refused to take milk in a cup... they will have juice and water in a cup.  I am letting them give it up in their own time.  My daughter was able to, so hopefully my boys will too.  If not, the bottles will eventually "disappear" if this goes on past 2 yrs old, and all that will be left to drink milk out of is sippy cups.

I don't really see the difference in drinking milk from a sippy cup or drinking milk from a bottle, I think they say the real problem lies in actually going to bed w/ the milk (whether in a bottle or sippy cup), not to mention they say the bottle becomes more of a comfort as they get older and its harder to wean them off it.  So, do what you feel is best... if you think it's time then take it away, if you think she needs more time then give it some time.  Mommy's were made with great instincts too, so do what you feel is best.

For us, the twins were off the bottle by the time they were 18 months. We started introducing whole milk at meal time at 12 months but we never gave them whole milk in a bottle. We started removing the afternoon bottle first, then the lunch one, then the morning one and lastly the nighttime one. We used sippy cups for milk and straw-bottles for water. We don't normally do a lot of juice and when we do, they just drink it out of the juice box.

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply. Now is see that you take away the bottle. I have taken the bottle away in afternoon awhile ago. She drinks milk like 2 oz in the morning. water thru out the day. water during dinner. So If i take away the bottle at night,   1. How do i take it away and   2. how do I continue to put her down??  I give her  the bottle and rock her for 5 min. She has dinner at 6. Wouldn't she wake up hungry?

Each kid is different. My daugter doesn't seem to get an appitite until 4ish and then she eats and snacks till 9pm. (She's 2) You could try a yogart smoothy or gogart before bed. Most kids love the gogart. When you say you give her 8oz and rock her, does the bottle go to bed? If so just give her a snack, not to heavy. I know my lo ate mashed potatoes and I think mac n cheese; these along with pudding, peanut butter crackers, all kinds of fruit, and sometimes cereal are her evening/night snacks. I just watch how much she eats and then make a snack accordingly. You could try skipping the bottle all together. Give her something low in sugar and just see if she will lay down. Juice has a bunch of sugar but natural sugar is better than high fructouse corn syrup. To much is like drinking coffee before bed time.

I quit rocking my daugter and gave her a snack before bed. We get take bath, then light snack, brush teeth, and then bed. If the snack is to big or heavy on tummy it's hard to fall asleep. Plus with the snack you might can skip rocking. I find it funny my lo would try to rock herself once I stopped. After a few nights she didn't need to be rocked, unless she was sick. Totally different. Good luck. Let us know how she is doing. Every kid is different and it's something that you will need to get a feel for based on how your daughter is. She might not give up the bottle but then again she may never miss it.

Wow so much to know. Thanks so much. and yes when she gets the bottle I rock her and I put her down and shes out. Just like another had mentioned to me , it works right now . It seems that it would be a couple sleepless nights right? She lately has been asking for more food at night time. So I wait it out alittle more cause she would be getting the bottle. Its funny cause I tried feeding her real fruit and she wont eat it. Loves it from the jar though. I recently gave her peanut butter for the first time. Was your daughter going straight to bed asleep was she restless? I know im such a new mom :) Oh and she has 5 teeth so im assuming thats enuff to give her crackers now?? And shes on 2% milk per my doctor.
