We're just about ready to start potty training our almost 2-year old "for real". The potty has been sitting in the bathroom for months now, and it's his favorite seat in the house. He loves to hang out on it when we are in there, but he refuses to sit on it without at least a diaper on. We've tried a number of times, and you have to physically hold him down to get him to sit on it without his diaper, which I don't imagine is a very good potty-training strategy! :-) I'm not sure how to proceed with potty training until we overcome this little obstacle... Anyone have any thoughts?

If that doesn't work, one of the potty training strategies that was discussed for my son was putting him on the potty with a diaper we had cut a hole in. He wouldn't poop on the potty until he was close to 4 years old. His autism therapist suggested we try that. Thankfully he got over his fears so we didn't have to resort to that.
Permalink Reply by Margaret on June 6, 2012 at 10:08pm We tried potty training our son at 18 months. He loves to sit on the potty but would never go! I asked other moms T our daycare and they all say "DON'T RUSH HIM!' He will go when he is ready! They were right, except it took a little longer then I wanted it to! Kainan is now 3. I told him he had to pee in the big boy potty in order to be out with the big kids and not in the toddler room anymore. the next day started going pee in the big boy potty! Has been dry ever since! You just have to let him go on his own time. Now I will not give you advice on the #2 issue because we haven't mastered that. He started to go #2 then he got sick and now he will not go at all. So I have a couple new toys on the bathroom shelf and if he goes poop in the potty he gets to pick one! good luck with your little guy! There really is no need to rush him into pottying he will only rebel!
