I have been successfully breastfeeding my daughter for 9 and a half months and my period has returned. I was just wondering what experiences other nursing moms have had. I had my first menstruation 2 weeks ago and it was painful and lasted about 4 days. Last night I started again and I am very achy. It hasn't seemed to change the amount of milk but I don't pump so I am not sure, but my daughter doesn't seem to be any hungrier than normal.

Thank you for any advice you can provide.

My son will be turning one next week and I have yet to see a spot of blood.  He's still nursing, but only twice a day, and I've gradually stopped pumping over the past few months as he's eating more solids and transitioning over to other fluids.  But my cycles were a bit irregular even before I was pregnant (so much so that becoming pregnant was a bit of a surprise), so I really have no idea when Aunt Flo might pay me a visit again...
With my oldest daughter I started my period when she was about 13 months. And she weaned herself. It seemed as soon as I started she instantly rejected my milk. I heard that it can change the way your milk tastes. With my now 12 month old I still havent started my period although I have felt cramping from time to time. But no period.
I had 2 1/2 weeks of post-partum bleeding then 4 weeks later my period started. Not even a short break from menstration. I was so upset. I did notice a drop in my milk supply right around the time I would start. Which was not fun feeling tired because your about to start and a baby waking up twice as often hungry. Everyone is different, if your little one isn't acting hungrier she is probably fine. They WILL let you know :)
I got my cycle back about 6-7 weeks postpartum and I'm still breastfeeding.  My cycles aren't regular yet, but I have had one each month since I started.
I finally had to stop nursing my son last week (thankfully he will b one in two weeks) because I kept getting my period. It would start and last 5 daysand then two weeks and sometimes sooner it would start again. This started when he was 9 months old. My dr. Said it was due to the mini pill I was on but I couldnt change it until I stopped nursing.plus I felt that my milk supply was not as sufficient as before. Good luck.
I'm still breastfeeding my 3 month old son, but I got my first period when he was 10 weeks old. Both of my sisters got theirs back around the same times with their children. I think it depends on the women in your family. If you have sisters (or if your mom breastfed you) ask what their experiences were, because you're likely to have the same. Mine was exactly like my sisters' periods. IDK what methods of birth control my sisters used, I know my mom was not allowed to use any at all. I'm on Implannon-which is great!- and my period still went the same as my older sisters. Good luck to everyone!
