So I have been breastfeeding exclusively for 10 weeks now and am ready to start doing things by myself. For example we have a softball league here I would really like to join and play on a regular basis to maintain my sanity. However my daughter refuses to take a bottle. We tried today for over an hour to get her to take the bottle and she screamed her head off and cried like it was the worst thing ever, finally she fell asleep without eating anything. We are so stressed trying to get her to take a bottle and I am on the verge of tears because if we can't get to take a bottle I won't be able to do anything outside of the house!!!

We have Dr. Brown's bottles which she won't take and the Medela bottle which she took once and hasn't taken since. I also bought an "orthodontic" nipple out in town but it just streams out the milk I pump without her sucking on it and when she did suck on the nipple it choked her and she started crying again. I have tried holding her in different positions to include the bouncy seat and she just screams and cries. It is heartbreaking because I have no idea what to do! My son was bottle fed the entire time and as much as I enjoy breastfeeding I feel like I am stuck in the house with her because she won't take a bottle and sometimes I just don't want to breastfed anymore because I can't get any time to myself because she won't take a bottle. I just ordered the breast-flow bottle and I hope that when it gets here it will work. Any advice would be really helpful thanks ladies!

(P.S. Living overseas means I have to order EVERYTHING online because there is nothing here like the states!)

Have any of you tried the "tommee tippee" bottles? I think they're mostly sold at babiesrus. But they were made over in the UK I think and they're supposed to be the closest thing to a real nipple. I had to use a bottle when my baby was only a couple of weeks old and I was worried about nipple confusion, but with this bottle I was easily able to switch back. Though now I'm in the same boat as everyone else - she hates drinking out of a bottle. When we were on vacation it was very hot and I was trying to give her some water from the bottle and she wouldn't drink it, so I gave it to her in the lid and she loved it!
Courtney,
I had to do trial and error with the sippy cups too... we started with a tupperware bell cup with the lid (anyone remember those?) But because of the fast flow we had to find something else. We tried a Nuk brand cup as it had a softer sippy spout, and then an Avent as it was a more of a slower flow cup. The funny part is that the cup she seems to take to the best is The First Years Take-n-Toss sippy cups. Most of what I found say from 6 months and up, but my daughter is 6 months old and has been using a sippy cup for 3 months now.

Ladies,
It seems to be more of a "girl thing" apparently! My baby shower gifts now include a sippy cup as a "just-in-case" and it is something that will eventually be used. The most important thing is to feel comfortable regardless what happens. Do whats best for you and your baby. I have had more people look at me feeding her with a sippy cup and make comments, but it works so I dont pay them any mind.
The best advice is your baby will not starve herself! She will eat when she is hungry. I just recently went back to work and work 12hour evenings, my daugher held out for 12-14hours at a time. we went through 6 different bottles and several different nipples. My daughter perfers the latex(brown) nipples over the silicone(clear). she would do the same by crying when she was offered the bottle. I had to have other people try feeding her and i left the room, usually upstairs to pump. My husband would try her once the 3-4hour mark came around and she acted hungry, if she cried he tried for 5-10mins then put her in her swing. After an hour he would try again. some nights she wouldn't take any and others she would take 4-5 oz. It took about 4 weeks to get her in the swing of things. other tips i was given was to use a pacifer to get her used to a plastic nipple. that and pump and feed her from the bottle until she takes it regularly. Hope some of this helps. Keep trying and try not to stress about it, remember she will eat when she is hungry.
