Help! My daughter spits up so much and I don't know why

My daughter is two months old. When she was a month old we were feeding her six ounces. Not even an hour later she would be hungry again so I started feeding her six ounces. She got to where she would basically spit up everything I just fed her. I took her to the Dr. he said I should only be feeding her four ounces. I feed her four ounces every three hours . I counted one day and she spit up about six or seven times in two hours. I was told she may lactose intolerant so I bought a can of soy formula to try out to see if it helps. Maybe I'm just over reacting. She is gaining weight just fine. Sometimes her stool seems a little watery but not to much.....could that mean something is wrong? I'm not asking medical advice but I just want to see if someone has ever had this problem. The Dr. told me his son would spit up a lot too and all babies will and some months it seems to peak but by eight months it should stop. Can someone tell me if you have had this problem.

If the soy forms didn't fix the issue, try other ones too. We found that our two month old spits up much less with Similac organic than she did with the emfimil or Similac Advanced. It's never been TOO bad, but some days are worse than others too. If you daughter is wetting around 6 diapers a day and her stool is the way you described with her gaining weight, your Doctor is probably right that everything is fine. If at any point she stops peeing or pooping or stops gaining weight, get her checked out.
My niece had a straight esophagus and the flap at the bottom wasn't closing, so anytime she layed down she'd spit up. My sister took her to a specialist and they had to have her on a medication and special prescription formula and carry around a beach towel rather than a burp cloth. It took many months, but she gradually got better. She is now a healthy robust 10yr old, however, even still she throws up VERY easily, and has to go see the specialist every year.

My daughter was diagnosed with GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) at a month old and excessive spit-ups along with many other symptoms are related to this disease. My daughter would also seem to be hungry and want to eat excessively although now three months I've never given her over 4-5 ounces yet. The way my doctor explained it to me is that GERD is acid reflux/ heartburn for babies and after spitting up the stomach acid my be burning their esphogus and to soothe the burning the baby in turn wants to drink more milk which makes you think your baby is hungry when she really may not be. I'm not saying your daughter has this, but it's something to look into espeically if switching formulas don't help. Hope this helps... Below are some of the symptoms:

We had the same problem with Kayla. Especially when she started to crawl. No matter what position, how long we put her there she always spit up. It wasn't huge amounts, but we both thought she shouldn't be spitting up that much, all the time! We asked the dr and she said that some babies just do that. Well, we were visiting his parents and I forgot her diaper bag at his mom's house, so we had to go BRU and get all new stuff. We got some ready to feed stuff (enfamil premium) and let me tell you: it was the best thing ever that I forgot her diaper bag!! She hardly ever spits up - even she does, its barely even a little spit up! I wish I would have forgot her bag earlier! I hope this helps!

I had the same problem with my little girl from about 1 month old until she was 4 months. She was spitting up so much, but she seemed hungry all the time. I switched her formula so many times, and the doctor told me that soy has something in it that causes girls to "mature" faster, not sure if it is true, but I didn't want to continue the soy, it didnt seem to help anyway.

Finally, they ended up giving her zantac to see if that helped. I eventually switched doctors and he stopped the zantac and told me to only feed her 4oz (at the time). It ended up being that I was over feeding her. I thought she was hungry but really I should have been letting her nap or try to entertain her instead.

Now she is 7 months old, she only eats 6oz every four hours, and sometimes baby food. She still spits up but rarely.

Also, my daughters stool is sometimes watery still, but as long as it has some sort of "chunks" in it, it should be fine.

If theres nothing but watery and no substance, then it is a problem if it is continuous.

I have a 4 month old daughter and let me tell you she has had this problem since she was 1 month.  She was born almost 5 weeks premature and our biggest challenge was just getting her to eat. Now we are even lucky if she can keep down the formula she eats.  She is on solid foods and I will say that it has been a tremendous help, but the best formula I have found has been Similac for Spit up (which is in the green can).  My daughter also has GERD's and she was put on the Zantac as well.  The Zantac was worked very well with her and since switching to this new formula I have noticed a significant difference.  It also contains some rice so it fills her little tummy up and she is sleeping almost 12 hours a night.  I only feed her 3-4 ounces depending on if she is eating her solids or based on her "hunger" cry.

We have also bought her a baby rocker which looks almost like a baby rocking chair (wal mart) and I will sit her in that when I feed her because she can sit upright while eating and it is easier for her food to digest. If you feel more comfortable holding her then sit her upright where she is facing out and her back is against you and then just bend her over forward to burp her.  Make sure after her feedings you do not joggle her around a bunch or bounce her for at least 5 minutes because this will ensure a more proper digestion. Putting her on your shoulder to burp her presses against her tummy and out will come the water works.  Soy is a lighter type of milk so therefore she is not filling up the way she should and of course if they are continuously spitting up then you will have to keep feeding more and more.  Soy is good for babies who are premature and also babies who have have heavy gas problems since it is lighter on their tummies.

In regards to her stool, the watery is ok as long as she is having a bowel movement and she is able to poop easily.  If she begins to strain and her poops are still watery then I would call your doctor.  I hope this has helped and I completely understand what you are going through.  Good Luck with everything!!!!

My daughter just turned five months and I have also dealt with this from the beginning. They switched her to a lot of different formulas and nothing helped so I put her on enfamil AR and it worked wonders she has only spit up a few times since I started it. I would reccomend trying it.

Hi hun my twins had this same problem I had tried a soy formula similac for sensitive tummys nothing seem to work than I went ahead and tried nutramagien I hope I spelled that right its a enfamil brand that is for babies with allegries to cows milk protien and since than they have had no problems. I hope this helps

My son also has GERD and was put on pepcid for it. Before he got diagnosed with GERD they did and ultrasound to look at the opening of his stomach to make sure that the formula was going where it was suppose to. They were looking for a condition called pyloricstenosis you can look it up to get more information on it. However if your daughter is spitting up that much I would talk the pedi about it.

My daughter was born May 11th. She also spit up a lot and was very gassy. I talked to the nurse at the pediatricians office and she suggested switching bottles and if that didn't help switching formula. I switched to Playtex Advanced Ventaire bottles. Also switched formulas to Enfamil Gentlease. This has helped so much. Just by switching the bottles alone her spit up dramatically decreased. Also burping every ounce and not overfeeding. She eat every 3 to 4 hours. Good luck

My son is 5 months old and we had this issue from birth.  He was spitting up so much and I knew it wasn't right. I tried every formula out there and he seemed to respond well to the Enfamil A/R (for spitting up). It has rice powder in it so it is a little thicker. He broke out in a rash with it so we talked to his Dr.  He was gaining weight as he should but the pedi still had us put rice cereal instead and switch to Nutramigen at 4 weeks old.  We found he was allergic to rice which is why he broke out with the A/R formula so we had to switch that to oatmeal with the Nutramigen. He was also on Zantac. I didn't find that the meds helped much but the cereal and new formula did. Oh and we started using Dr Brown's bottles.  He still spits up but not nearly as much. They also did an upper GI to rule out the pyloric stenosis. Good luck and hang in there!

My son spit up a LOT (it seemed as if it was his whole bottle throughout the 3 hrs inbetween it was crazy) until he was about 5 months old. They have Enfamil A&R which helps with spit up. I never used it but I've heard it helps. Keep her in a bouncer or an inclined seat, or on a boppy, for 30 minutes after a feeding. Buy an incline for her crib (it helped my son a LOT at night). And maybe try smaller, more frequent bottles. She also might have gas pockets, then the air pushes the formula out. So try burping every ounce. Reduce the time spent using pacifiers (they suck in air as they suck). These things helped reduce my sons spitting up so much. Especially the burping every ounce.

She is now 8 months and because of this she still wasn't gaining weight. Last month the dr said she weighed 14 pounds but it could have read it wrong since she was moving around. We switched her formula since her dr wasn't wanting to listen to me. We have had no more spitting up and it's been a month.
