I have been having chronic uti's since I was pregnant. My son is almost 8 months old. While I was pregnant my uti's were always lower uti's. I started having upper uti's in January. If I'm not careful about watching for them they will get so bad it kills my back for me to bend over and put my shoes on. And I my temperature will go through the roof. The first really bad one hit on my birthday. I couldn't stand up straight or bend over. I was shaking uncontrollably and my fever got up to 103.4. My primary care doctor sent me to a urologist and he has suggested a urethral dilation. I have read reviews online about them and everyone says they are horribly painful after the anesthesia wears off and if there are good results they don't last. But mostly I read that there weren't good results. I'm wondering if I should go through with it. I don't know what to do. If anybody has had it done please let me know what your experience with it was like.

I haven't had to go through it, but it sounds awful. Hopefully somebody who has been through it can weigh in. I hope you feel better soon!

I also had the same problem with UTI's. I had a procedure done I don't remember what it was called they injected around my urethra so I wouldn't urinate on myself while coughing, sneezing, or laughing. It didn't last long at all. I regret having it done. The other option they gave me after the surgery was pelvic floor rehabilitation. The therapy I receive they hook a small tube looking thing in my vagina and use electro therapy forcing the muscles work. This has helped strengthen my muscles and I have not been urinating on myself and since therapy I have not had a UTI in over 8mo.
I'm glad to hear you are seeing improvements. One other thing that i read was the procedure was mostly used to help with lower uti's. Mine are always in my kidneys. My primary thinks that my kidney stone is what keeps causing my infections. But she told me that I may not pass it on my own. I just can't decide if I want to go through with the dilation procedure. I don't want to start something just to have to repeat it every year or so.
I am currently 40 years old. I have had three urethral dilations since I was 14. They are painful, but not excrutiating. My opinion is that it is definitely worth the pain to get the procedure done. If you don't get it done, you may end up destroying your kidneys and that would be a horrible price to pay. It is not so painful that you can't handle it....and the good news is that the pain really only lasts for a day or two at the most. I recommend that you get it done. You will be glad that you did in the long run. Good luck : )
Thanks Traci. A lot of what I read made it out to be the most painful experience of their lives.

Hi Kasie, I have a few unconventional suggestions that I do not see here. Start drinking Rasberry leaf tea and Stinging Nettle tea regularly. You can pick them up at your local health food store. Lots of cranberry juice or take the pills, make sure you are drinking a min of 8 cups of water. Wake up and drink two before anything, same at lunch and snacks drink a glass before eating. I can pretty much guaranty that if you keep this up your UTI's will not be a problem. I have a girlfriend who use to get them often and after doing this she rarely gets them, when she feels one coming on she starts drinking the rasberry leaf tea and doesn't have to go to the dr.
Good luck :)

Thanks Megan, I hadn't thought about the raspberry tea. I have been drinking nothing but water and takin the cranberry pills. I have my sixth or seventh infection so far this year right now. I have questioned my dr several times about what I can do to prevent them and keep getting the same answers. I'm tired of having them but no one can tell me what keePs causing them. I'm having one every few weeks. I think it's safe to say the antibiotics they keep giving me aren't completely getting rid of the infections.
