My 1 year old has HFMD and its killing me. I hate to see him all brokeout in that rash. The only plus is that it's not currently itching him and he only has a couple in his mouth, which has not affected his eating. To me, it seems there are a lot more cases going around lately than I recall over the last several years. Anyone else experiencing this? What's crazy is I've heard of it in passing but now that my son has it, I'm running into all kinds people saying their child or someone they know has it. I've never known or heard about anyone with it. I have a younger cousin that has it right now too and she's never even seen my son, it's just a weird coincidence.

We had HFM 2 summers ago. It was awful, but thankfully, it was also quick.  I think you're probably hearing so much about it now because it's so contagious. Usually once one person gets it, everybody in the house, and school district, and local towns get it. It's crazy.  We got it at a popular splash park.

When we got it, my son was first with symptoms. He had sores all over his tongue and inside his cheeks. I got it too, a day later- all over my cheeks and gums. My husband had it the worst; his hands and feet started peeling, too.

My doctor prescribed "magic mouthwash" which is a mix of liodcaine, maalox, and benadryl. It was amazing and was the only reason my son or I were able to eat.

My 2 yr old caugth it alone with scarlet fever and gave me the HFM, being prego it really kicked my energy and I couldn't eat or drink. The DR had me mix liquid antacid (maalox if you can get it, taste best) and liquid benadryl (or generic) 50/50. I would dab it on the spots in mouth.

My son had this when he was about 18 months old.  My doctor assured me it looks ten times worse than it actually is.  She said he probably picked it up at daycare and that it was pretty common.  I was horrified, though... The name is very scary! :-(

My 1yr old daughter just got over having that, the doc says its going around pretty bad this year and she got it at the pool. I've never heard of it before and she never got the spots on her skin or blisters but it all started with a 102 fever. She was all red in the back of her throat but it never messed with her eating at all. At least I was able to piggy-back the meds to keep the fever under control. If u start with Motrin then u can give tylenol 4hrs later followed by Motrin again 4hrs after that if needed. And the fevers usually don't kick in till the afternoon or evening...
Yes my son just got over HFAM. He didn't get rash on his body just in his mouth. It was terrible, he wouldn't eat or drink anything and had to be admitted into hospital for 2days. It lasted for a little over 2 weeks. I have never heard of it until my lilman got it. I looked it up on the net and it said only little ones could get it, but that is so not true cause mommy and Daddy got it too. Makes everything so much worse because neither of us had any energy but had to take care of our lo. It is really hard cause you want to give your lo love, but definitely do everything you can to keep from contracting it yourself. Good luck with everything!!

Yep, definitely not true. My husband and I got it from my son, too. It was not fun!

My niece has HFM disease right now. She started out with a fever of 102 and wouldn't eat or drink (her throat was probably sore). The rash didn't show up until a day or two later (after her fever broke). Her pediatrician said it is highly contagious and rampant right now. We live in western NC.

Wow! Lots of HFM going around... My son started with the high fever all last Friday... The fever broke about 7am that Saturday and that night is when the rash showed up... He had a few bumps at first but over night it grew to a lot more... That was a week ago.... He's been about 80% himself feeling wise this week... And now the rash has pretty much dried up...

my 8 1/2 month old had it about 2 to 3 weeks ago and the doc said it wasn't that bad. around his month 2 to 3 on his hands and 1 to 2 on his foot and nothing in his mouth. don't know how he got it, he's not in daycare or really around any other people/kids. thank God it's done now and the bumps are just about gone, it looked bad around his mouth:(

My 1 year old just had this last week. OMG! He wasnt eating anything solid so Ice Cream, Yogurt, pudding and Pedialyte pops when he had his fever. I've never heard of this before until now. He was so not himself! No playing, just a lot of laying around! I'm so glad it's over! U sure don't get manual of all these hidden sicknesses.

hello, yes this has become very common. I was also told that a lot of children are getting from baby pools. this disease can also cause peeling of the skin i think. Although i hope yours has not experienced this. I do hope your son is feeling better :)

Yes, the peeling of the skin is true.  It appears where the blisters have been.  My daughter had huge blisters (SA of dimes or larger) on her toes and around her nails and she is now losing those nails.  As always, if you have any concerns talk to your Dr and good luck!
