So, I am on my second baby.  I am 30 weeks and I went to the doc today and he said I was measuring 34.5!  I've only gained 20 pounds, doc said I was doing good on that.  I took 2 glucose tests.  The first was high by like 3 points.  I guess I passed the 3 hour because no one ever called me or made me go see a dietician or anything.  My doc said at 28 weeks to alter my diet and see what happens.  I basically changed my diet to be that of someone with gestational diabetes.  I didn't want to bother with more tests and classes, plus it's best for me and my baby.  I did not have any glucose in my urine today.  So, I could be carrying lots of water or have gestational diabetes?  I have an ultrasound scheduled for next week.

My first baby was 9lbs 21.5 inches, so kinda big.  I did carry lots of water with him.  I only gained about 30 pounds with him.  I also measured big...I guess this doc just seemed really concerned and is freaking me out.

I feel smaller this time though, not as big.  I guess I'm just worried that it's gestational diabetes and my diet isn't working.

Anyone know why some women carry so much water?

Could I be diabetic even though I haven't gained much weight?  (for me 20 pounds isn't a lot - I'm not a small person anyways)  I am the kind of person that gains weight in my stomach, prego or not.

Try not to freak out. It's just a guide, and frankly, Dr.s put too much stock in it.

With my son, by the time I was 38 weeks, I was measuring 48. Of course they had me go for weekly ultrasounds to check his growth. On the final ultrasound they measured him at 10 pounds 13 ounces. Boy, weren't we all surprised when he came out at a puny 9 pounds 11 ounces.

With my daughter I consistently measured 6 weeks ahead. She came out weighing 9 pounds, 10 ounces.

Big babies, in the 9 pound range, are not going to always fit into the "1 cm per week" rule for belly measurement.

If your glucose was only off by 3 points, it's unlikely you're diabetic. You just have a big baby. :)

my SIL was always compalining how big her baby was she was huge she weighed 220 when she had her son and she is only 5'2 they told her she was having a big baby she did have gestational diabetes and her son was a teeny tiny 6.4! If u were retatning alot of water your ankle hands and face would be puffy so maybe your just having a big baby no need to stress

Thanks, I guess I just need some reassurance from other moms.  I think doctor's these days do go a little overboard about things...causing their patients to freak out!  They were predicting this baby to be smaller than my first, so we were all expecting it I guess.  I know that ultrasounds are never too accurate when it comes to weight though.  I'm hoping it's just a big baby.  I don't have any swelling or puffiness, so I guess it's not excess water.  I just hope it's not diabetes....I've already changed my diet completely, so I guess if it is, insulin or pills would be the next step.  Annoying, I only have 2 more months!

And everything turned out fine at my US.  I hate it when these doctors freak over stuff.  My baby is in the 82nd percentile....could be medium sized or a little big.  My husband is very tall, so our last baby was big too.  I'm still keeping up with my diet...they say I am glucose intolerant, which is a little different than having gestational diabetes.  I was more worried about my diet not working and having a 15 pound baby with medical problems.  I know I'm not a doctor, but I know my body and self better than anyone, I wish all doctors would listen to their patients more!
