I have heard many different things regarding breastfeeding and tattoos. I was told that you can't breastfeed if you have a tattoo. My cousin said that someone told her that she couldn't b/c of the tattoos on her chest and my sil is pregnent and wants to breastfeed and she has a couple on her. What do you think? Can you or not? What about getting one while breastfeeding?

I have never asked my OB or pediatrician about this, but I have 2  tattoos and I breastfed my son.  The hospital where I delivered knew I had tattoos and they were helping me to get the breastfeeding going, so I imagine they would have said something if that was a no no.   I know that you can't get one if you are pregnant....at least the tattoo parlor/artist shouldn't do it.  I don't know if I would get one while breastfeeding, I would think it would be best to wait until after all that is finished with.

I breastfed my son for almost 2 years, and I'm still breastfeeding my almost-18-month-old daughter. I have a tattoo right above my left breast, as well as a few more in other places. There's no reason you can't breastfeed. Frankly, I even had both nipples pierced. I've taken out the piercings, but any scar tissue or whatnot has had no effect whatsoever. :)

I also know a couple of women who have implants and who breastfeed. There really aren't many reasons why a woman can't breastfeed other than drug or alcohol usage.

I am so glad someone mentioned piercings. I had questions about feeding with mine pierced. My OB said take them out on the way to hospital and leave them out b/c the risk of infection with putting in and out jewlery. I fed for almost 6 months with them out and everything was fine. I wonder how many women skip out b/c the don't have the facts. Or are embarrassed to ask...

I breast feed & I have 3 tattoos ! My OB has never said anything about not being able to . If you are planning on getting a new tattoo while breast feeding , you might want to ask about that :)

where do people come up with this stuff? I have 6 tattoos and  I have breastfed my daughter fr 2 years! If it was a real danger a dr would inform you.

what?? that is quite possibly the silliest thing i've ever heard. why on earth would it matter if you had a tattoo?! LMAO - who would say such a thing?

now, when it comes to actually getting one while breastfeeding, i could see how maybe the hepatitis (sp?) risk might put up a red flag (which, i believe is why you can't donate blood within a year after getting a tattoo), but that's a red flag whether you're breastfeeding or not. personally, i'd wait until after i was done breastfeeding before i got another one, but that's just me. tattoos you already have, however, have zero bearing on whether or not you should breastfeed. for the love.

I have 4 tattoos, & I'm breast feeding/pumping, & I too have never been told not to by either my OB or lactation consultant. You can NOT however, get a tattoo while breast feeding- I've already asked a tattoo artist.

You can have tattoos (and even nipple piercings as long as they aren't doubled on each side) while breastfeeding. You just don't want to GET them while breastfeeding because of risk of infection.
