Anyone have any advice for how to safely loose the baby weight while still breastfeeding? I know you shouldn't really "diet" while you're nursing, but I have to go back to work soon and need to fit into at least some of my work clothes! :-)
I'm down to my last ten pounds (gained 50!), and I've started doing the calorie counting thing... It's working sort of slow and steady (have lost about 5 pounds in the last three weeks), but I want to make sure I'm keeping myself healthy and getting enough calories so I can still breastfeed my little one. Any advice would be appreciated!

Permalink Reply by Summer on August 20, 2012 at 11:38pm I did spark people at one point and liked it but they had a limited food database. Now I'm doing myfitnesspal.com and really like it. It's really user friendly and I have yet to enter a food and it not be in the database. You want to make sure to consume around 1800 calories I believe if you're breastfeeding at least 5 times a day. Myfitnesspal gives me about 1300 based on the info I entered and under the option to add food you can type in "breastfeeding" and it will credit you 500 calories. It also has fewer calorie amounts if you're not breastfeeding as often. I've lost 5 pounds so far...not really depriving myself (I had fried chicken and pumpkin pie tonight!). It's free and easy and if you're good about logging everything you put in your mouth and staying within your calories, you'll lose weight. And exercise is just a bonus. If you exercise it adds those calories to your limit. I exercise when I can/feel like it but don't if I don't want to. Weight Watchers is excellent as well but obviously it costs money. I did it and lost 20 pounds in three months a few years ago. I feel like myfitnesspal is just as good though.
Permalink Reply by Marissa on August 21, 2012 at 6:03am That's actually the website I'm using, too! My husband found it, and we've both had pretty good luck with it. What I really like about it is the way you can put in your own recipes and it calculates the calories for you. Where do you put in breastfeeding? I looked around when I first signed up but couldn't find it!
Permalink Reply by Summer on August 23, 2012 at 9:34pm You click "add food" and instead of typing in a food, type in "breastfeeding". It has options for breastfeeding and will add negative 500, 400 or 300 calories depending on which one you choose.
Permalink Reply by Marissa on September 3, 2012 at 9:54pm Love it! I did that last week and my weight loss almost tripled! I think I was eating way too few calories before and putting my body in starvation mode. Now I get to eat MORE and still lose weight! Thanks for filling in the missing piece of the puzzle!
Permalink Reply by Summer on September 3, 2012 at 11:44pm Oh good! I've lost 2 more pounds and still at it. I'm going to be sad when my baby starts nursing less because I won't get those extra calories! :)
I'm still breastfeeding and I started doing the body by vi shakes. I never thought I would be successful at it but it's been really easy and they are awesome! They have non-gmo soy so they won't mess with your estrogen levels. They will also provide the vitamins and minerals for your milk. You can order at www.slowens.bodybyvi.com . You can add fruit, a little peanut butter, ice cubes, low fat milk, anything you like. You can determine the calories in each shake by what you add to the base.
