Permalink Reply by Jen, Mom365 Host on February 7, 2012 at 10:43pm I followed my children's leads. With my son we started at 4 months and he ate 1/2 a jar of food twice a day. My daughter tasted food starting at 6 months and didn't start eating solids consistently until 11 months. She still has days where she doesn't want solid food, and she'll be one next week. .
At 4 months old your son doesn't need solid foods. Breast milk of formula has all of the nutrition he needs until he's closer to one. Go with the flow, experiment with textures and tastes, and see how much he tends to eat. After a few weeks you'll get a feel for how much and how often he's interested, and you can figure out a schedule then. Have fun with it!
Jen is correct. All your babies nutritional needs are met by breast milk and/or formula at 4 months old. This is the time to have fun and learn! :) I did the following with my son (who's now almost 11 months)... Make a few teaspoons of the cereal runny w/ either formula or breast milk. (adds a familiar flavor). Try it maybe once a day for a week or so. Just let Jaxson get used to the idea of solids and using his tongue to eat. Once he has the hang of it, you can start other basic foods (avocado, banana, and sweet potato are great ones that are easy to make at home). Also, my son started to get really constipated on the rice cereal or w/ too much banana. That's normal so don't worry. I just added an ounce or 2 of prune juice to his bottle for a couple days and good as new! :) Good luck!
Permalink Reply by jbaby on February 9, 2012 at 10:24am Hi. My pediatrician told me twice a day starting at 4 months.. But like the other moms said.. you have to follow your baby's cues. When I did twice a day my baby girl (now 5 Months old) was miserable.. She would be very cranky. So I started to do it once a day & shes doing great. I figured when she turns six months then I'll try the twice a day.
You mention your son is 4mo. Has your son showed sign that he is able to start breaking down the food. Is your son sitting up without support, has he lost the tongue reflex that pushes food out with his tongue? Is he having constipation problems?
is he able to open and close his mouth when he sees the spoon coming?
Well you shoud start solids aroung 6mo old, and he only needs to be offer once a day for about a month, to slowly introduce solids, he will do so much better!
Permalink Reply by dentalgirl on February 12, 2012 at 3:40pm We started at 6 months because at 4-5 months she wasn't ready, she just pushed it out with her tongue. I fed her brown rice and oatmeal, then slowly introduced fruits and veggie purees I made. I started only doing breakfast and dinner. Good luck!
Permalink Reply by muffetjane on February 13, 2012 at 9:13pm At 4 mos old we did one small feeding of rice cereal or baby oatmeal a day. Around 5 mos we increased to 2 times a day and added some baby foods (one at a time, watch for about 3 days w/ ea. new food to make sure they're not allergic) and at 6 mos. we did 3 "meals" a day. They still should be getting a good portion of their nutrients from breastmilk or formula though, so feed that in between and at night.
I've been doing every other meal as a solid meal. Start the day nursing, then rice or veggies/fruit with a small bottle, then a whole bottle, then the rice/veggie meal again and so on.... My daughter knows when she wants to eat solids and when she wants her milk. It's easy to discover and I let her take the lead and let me know what she wants - first thing in the morning and last thing at night it seems she wants only milk, but your babe might be different. in the middle of the day it seems she might want only solid food. I give her what she wants when she wants it and have learned when and where she will eat. Baby will let you know. At this point, before one year old, solid food is more about introducing the flavor and the technique to eat and playing around with learning how to eat. As long as she is getting the reccomended amount of milk every day (at this point, 18-24 oz), I am fine with whatever she eats. As long as baby seems to be growing and developing well enough, your doctor is happy with his growth, don't stress. It will happen very organically and naturally as baby is ready.
Permalink Reply by Janine on February 18, 2012 at 3:46pm When my oldest who is now 8 started solids we did cereal in the morning and then again before bed. The rest of the day we did formula. My daughter who is now 6 was a different type of eater so we only did cereal once a day for her. My baby now is only two months and we have not started him yet.
Permalink Reply by Desiray Brees on February 22, 2012 at 11:11pm I always started once a day and just kinda went from there. Like the other moms say breastmilk or formula is the main source of nutrition, the rice cereal right now is mainly to teach them how to eat and swallow foods. It all depends on your baby and how hungry he is. Mine started slow and worked their way to only having a night time bottle at 10 mos. Your little one will let you know, and you can decide how you feel as time passes.
