I have read that at this point 5 week olds are up more during the day for about 10 hours and are smiling.
My 5 week old is sleeping alot during the day but is away between the hours of 2-7 AM and then naps from 8-12 AM and takes other naps during the day right after eating (I breastfeed). Is this happening with anyone else? If you keep your baby up during the day how do you do that?
Also, we do some tummy time (every other day) and she is doing well holding her head up what are you doing during tummy time?
I was just wondering what your 5 week olds are doing, I know all babies are different and I'm a first time mom....
Thanks for any answers/comments.
thanks so much
** My second sentene is supposed to say awake during the hurs of 2-7 and I feed her twice during that time.
If she's awake between 2am-7am then she doesn't know the difference between night and day yet. That is the first thing she needs to learn if you're to ever get her sleeping thru the night. Make sure daytime is bright and noisy(TV on, radio, people visiting, taking her for walks, etc) while night time is dark and quiet(no playing or talking), etc. She will catch on night time is for sleeping. Setup a routine. Choose a bedtime and stick to it. Figure baby will eventually sleep 10-12 hrs from your chosen bedtime. Do not let her sleep for 4 hrs during the daytime. Its too long to go without eating at 5 weeks. She should be eating every 2 1/2-3 hrs during daytime. I would wake her up and feed her by the 3hr mark. Also she should be awake after you feed her a full meal. Your routine should be Wake, Eat, Play, Sleep every 2-3 hrs at this age. However I found thru trial and error to give my son either the breast or a little of a leftover bottle right before nap time and he would sleep longer cause his little tummy was full. I also still feed a full bottle at bedtime(hes 8 mos) so he sleeps 11 hrs without waking up hungry.
Get a crib gym with bright hanging objects that she can look at. Babies dont stay awake very long at this age less than an hour. I was exhausted at the 5 week point. It took me 5 1/2 weeks to figure out how to get him to sleep at night( by giving him the breast) and another 4 months to get him to sleep thru the night(putting in the crib).
Yes by 5 weeks mine was holding his head up too on his tummy. Look up Dreamfeed and start doing that. My son was sleeping 7-8 hrs by 3 months old with a dreamfeed.
Good Luck and hang in there! I know its horrible but its only temporary and they get so freakin cute in a few months you'll think it's all worth it:)
What time did you start your routine? I'm starting at 9 pm because I have to go back to work in 5 weeks and want to try and stick with a manageable schedule. Is this too early?
Yes my son's bedtime is 9:30 pm and his am wake time is 8-8:30(I get up at 7:30 for work). I have kept this bedtime the same since he was born.
How is he doing on his day's/nights? Have you got a schedule down for him? We usually started our routine a little later at night because I hated getting up with the chickens... lol
She is doing awesome! I started bathing her at 8 and feeding her right after. She eats (takes a nap) until about 10:30and sleeps until 7. I start back to work Monday and will have to get her up at 6, so its going great thanks so much!!!
